Another senseless death last night here in Phoenix. A 23-year-old-driver hit and killed a woman who was walking in the bike lane with her partner (he was missed by inches) near Norterra and North Valley Parkways in North Phoenix. Man, this stuff makes me so sad and sick.
The 23-year-old-driver drove off. He killed her and then fled. Was he drunk? Initial indications are that he might have been. Was he texting? Well, that is becoming more and more likely. When the woman’s family files a personal injury case here, her family’s attorney should discover his cell phone records and maybe even the hard drive of the phone itself. His phone records should be discoverable in personal injury litigation (meaning his lawyers must give it to the plaintiff). Hitting a woman who was on the shoulder of a road shows that he was distracted by something. Nowadays, cell phones lead a ridiculous amount of Arizona personal injury claims, and senseless wrongful death and personal injury across the nation.

I found these facts sobering:
Texting while driving is a growing trend, and a national epidemic, quickly becoming one of the country’s top killers. Drivers assume they can handle texting while driving and remain safe, but the numbers don’t lie.
Texting While Driving Causes:
1. 1,600,000 accidents per year – National Safety Council. 2. 330,000 injuries per year – Harvard Center for Risk Analysis Study. 3. 11 teen deaths EVERY DAY – Ins. Institute for Hwy Safety Fatality Facts. 4. Nearly 25% of ALL car accidents.
Texting While Driving Is:
5. About 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving intoxicated. 6. The same as driving after 4 beers – National Hwy Transportation Safety Admin. 7. The number one driving distraction reported by teen drivers. Texting While Driving: 8. Makes you 23X more likely to crash – National Hwy Transportation Safety Admin. 9. Is the same as driving blind for 5 seconds at a time – VA. Tech Transportation Institute. 10. Takes place by 800,000 drivers at any given time across the country. 11. Slows your brake reaction speed by 18% – HumanFactors & Ergonomics Society. 12. Leads to a 400% increase with eyes off the road.
The Grim Reaper loves when Arizona drivers text while driving. No one else does. These facts are via: http://www.textinganddrivingsafety.com/texting-and-driving-stats/. Great website, check it out.
